The History and Benefits of Yoni Steaming

The truth is… Yoni Steaming isn’t new.

Simply put, it is the act of creating a unique blend of natural and beneficial herbs (think basil, rosemary, and lavender) soaked in hot water, and utilizing warm steam to permeate the vagina, cervix, and uterus. It is believed that Yoni Steaming originated in the East, and has been utilized across Indigenous America, Greece, India, eastern Europe, Korea, Africa, the Philippines, Japan, and many other Asian countries. In Sanskrit, “Yoni” translates to “sacred place”, or literally, “womb”, and this practice has historically been used to cleanse the female body on a physical and emotional level. Yoni Steaming is a gentle, enjoyable, and empowering practice.

The Basics: The Yoni Steaming Process for All Levels

The all-levels Yoni Steaming process requires a Yoni Pot for water and herbs, and a Yoni Sauna (a wooden structure that holds your pot, and allows you to sit).

  • Start by heating 1-2 liters of water in your Yoni Pot over your stove.

  • Add your loose leaf herbs to your pot while heating.

  • Turn your heat to medium and let your herbs cook for 10 minutes.

  • If you are using a tea bag or infuser, remove the herbs. You can reuse these herbs the next day if you wish- it’s not recommended to use the herbs more than twice.

  • Place your warm water into your Yoni Sauna, making sure that your water is not too hot.

  • Relax your legs and take a comfy seat! Enjoy the cleansing and purifying process of your Yoni Steam.
